Wheeler holds virtual Cum Laude Society induction

On Monday, Wheeler recognized 17 inductees into the Cum Laude Society during a virtual ceremony with faculty speaker Marc Harrison, Upper School Science Faculty & Upper School Unity and Diversity Coordinator. Founded in 1906, the Cum Laude Society is dedicated to honoring scholastic achievement in secondary schools. The founders of the society modeled Cum Laude after Phi Beta Kappa and in the years since its founding, Cum Laude has grown to 382 chapters, approximately two dozen of which are located in public schools and the rest in Independent schools. Membership is predominantly in the United States, but chapters also are located in Canada, England, France, Spain, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

During the address, Harrison spoke about his upbringing in the Bronx, New York, and Bermuda. Sharing insights about New York City in the late 70s, a place he describes as the “nexus of the universe,” and how moving 800 miles away to Bermuda from where he believed would be his forever home turned out to be “the gift of a lifetime.” At the end of his address, he encouraged students to do three things:
- Acknowledge that we are the stewards of our surroundings. Whether land, animals, people, or even inanimate objects, we have a responsibility to acknowledge and take care of every environment in which we find ourselves.
- Recognize that life is a series of moments. Always look for opportunities within them, even in those moments which seem insurmountable at the present time.
- We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. There is very little that we EVER do alone or without the help, support, and encouragement of someone else. Always remember that. Recognize them, Acknowledge them, Honor them.
