Physical Education

Building Lifelong Health, Fitness, and Enjoyment

Physical education (PE) plays a critical role in the overall development of every elementary student. Through movement, exploration, and active play, students channel their energy creatively while building habits for lifelong health and fitness. PE classes offer structured opportunities to learn about movement, strategies, teamwork, and problem-solving in an engaging environment.

Lower School (Grades 1-5): Foundations of Movement and Fun

In Lower School, we introduce students to a variety of physical activities, sports, and fitness methods to help them enjoy physical activity while developing social and cognitive skills. As students’ progress, they are exposed to basic sport-specific skills through fun, lead-up games that keep them active and engaged. The goal is for students to grow more confident in their physical abilities and discover activities they can enjoy throughout their lives.

Class Frequency: Grades 1-5 meet 4 times in an 8-day cycle for 40 minutes per class. Kindergarten meets 3 days in an 8-day cycle, including a farm day.

Middle School: Expanding Choices and Skills

In Middle School, we offer students more autonomy by providing elective options. Each student selects from a variety of activities, including team sports, lifetime sports, and recreational games. Although we aim to give students their first-choice elective, they sometimes receive their second-choice. These electives run for approximately 6 classes, giving students a solid foundation in a chosen area before rotating to another activity.

Class Frequency: Middle school students meet 3 times in an 8-day cycle for 50 minutes per class.

Upper School: Flexibility and Independent Pursuits

Upper school students have the widest range of options for fulfilling their PE requirements. They can meet the requirements by:

  • Participating on a school athletic team.
  • Joining a PE class during enrichment or using the weight room.
  • Enrolling in PE electives offered after school, such as yoga, rock climbing, or archery.
  • Submitting an independent contract to pursue a physical activity outside of school, such as fencing, martial arts, gymnastics, or horseback riding, under the supervision of a qualified instructor or coach.

Class Frequency: Upper school students must complete a minimum of 100 minutes of physical activity per week, in line with state requirements.

Our Philosophy: Safe, Enjoyable, and Respectful Learning Environment

Across all divisions, our primary focus is to make physical education a positive and enjoyable experience. We aim to create a safe, supportive, and comfortable environment where every student feels valued. Enthusiasm and mutual respect are at the heart of fostering a fun and engaging PE experience that encourages lifelong physical activity.
